As we make our way through a time of social isolation, let’s look back at Peabody’s Annual Firemen’s Ball.
At the turn of the 20th Century, this event was held at the Peabody Opera House, now known as City Hall’s auditorium. The Boston Herald reported in 1907 that the ball was attended by 1,500 people.
The Firemen’s Ball raised funds for the firefighters’ relief fund, which cared for retired firemen.
Below you can see an invitation, ribbon, menu and dance card from this annual soiree.
It is just a small sampling of the Peabody Historical Society’s excellent fire history collection.
