Eastman Gelatine plaque, after 2024 restoration

In 2024, the Honor Roll plaque was restored (see finished plaque above) and will be moved to the corner of Washington Street and Allens Lane. Rousselot graciously gave the Peabody Historical Commission the plaque so it could be preserved and displayed in perpetuity.

This was no small undertaking. It required the combined efforts of:

Members of the Peabody Historical Commission
Peabody Veteran’s Agent, Steve Patten, who funded the restoration
The Peabody Historical Society
The Peabody DPW
The City of Peabody
Other important, knowledgeable volunteers, like Dave Cronin and Bob Langley, along with countless others

On November 11th, the City of Peabody Veterans Services Department will be holding its annual breakfast at City Hall’s Wiggin Auditorium. Doors open at 8:30. At this event, they would like to acknowledge the service of those on the Honor Roll plaque.

If you, or anyone you know, are related to these veterans, you are encouraged to reach out to Steve Patten at [email protected].

In conjunction with the plaque restoration, we want to delve into the lives two men on the plaque, Francis Stephen Stankovitch (1921-1943) and David Franklin Warren (1919-1945). Both died in service.

Francis S. Stankovitch, Draft Card

Frank S. Stankovitch was born on July 23, 1921 to Stephen and Annie Stankovitch. Both of his parents emigrated from Lithuania and settled in Peabody, Massachusetts. He had an older sister, Stella.

He worked at the Eastman Gelatine Corp, as a dowbler. He died from heat exhaustion on July 22, 1943, while training at Fort Eustis, Virginia, the day before his 22nd birthday.

David Franklin Warren, Draft Card

David Franklin Warren was born to William and Hattie Warren on July 14, 1919. His siblings were Dorothy, Harriet, Hilda, Mary and William. David married Phyllis Elizabeth Little, also of Peabody, on November 10, 1940.

He served in the Marines and died on March 12, 1945 at Iwo Jima, Japan. He is buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
